Maths

At Ashtree Primary Academy, our aim is that children become mathematically fluent problem-solvers who are confident in their ability to work with number and to reason logically.

To achieve this, we focus on developing a strong number sense in all our pupils. We begin by using concrete resources, which allow children to gain clear understanding of numbers. From there, we gradually move to pictorial representations and, finally, to abstract concepts. Throughout this process, we provide ample opportunities for practice, ensuring that pupils build the automaticity needed to tackle increasingly complex mathematical problems with accuracy.

We currently use the HFL Essentials Maths programme as the basis for our Maths curriculum. Mathematical domains are broken down into learning sequences which allows children to master concepts at their own pace, and teachers can regularly monitor their progress. We also focus on building mathematical vocabulary, so that children can express their ideas clearly and precisely.

Pupils receive Maths as a daily discrete lesson. However, this is also supplemented with fluency lessons, the daily timetable and calendar, times tables practice, and cross-curricular opportunities - such as applying maths skills in Science and Computing lessons.
